Officers tried to pull over a car on the South Side, but the driver did not stop, prompting a chase. Johnny Perez with SAPOA said, “Our south patrol officers were looking for this vehicle as possible robbery suspects.” Police tracked the vehicle using a helicopter until it stopped at a gated community near Ginger Rise and Wild Pine in the Alamo Ranch subdivision. Police said the passenger got out and tried to open the entrance gate. When officers confronted him, police said he reached for his gun. “The gun was displayed and the officer had to take action,” Perez said. An officer shot the passenger, killing him. Police said the man who was killed was 36 years old. Police said the driver, a 20-year-old man, was taken to the hospital after he turned the gun on himself. He was listed in critical condition. A woman in the backseat, identified as 20-year-old Destiny Nicole De La Rosa, was not injured. She was booked on wanted person for felony warrants unrelated to the incident. Perez said the officer was forced to make a split-second decision, adding, “These types of things can really shake up an officer, no matter how many years you have on,” The officer involved has been with the department for five years and was placed on administrative duty, which is department protocol after a shooting. ---- According to the San Antonio Police Department, Street Crimes Unit officers were conducting surveillance in the area as part of robbery investigations. It was just after midnight when things escalated as street crimes officers tried to pull over a car that had two men inside. During the chase, a police helicopter was flying overhead to help spot the suspects. Police tell us the driver would not stop, leading officers throughout the city. The driver finally stopped at a gate in Alamo Ranch off Lone Star Pass and Wild Pine. Police say the passenger, identified as a 36-year-old male, got out of the vehicle as one officer approached. He pulled out a gun, and the officer shot and killed him. Afterwards, police say the driver, a 21-year-old male, shot himself inside the car. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. An adult female passenger, identified as 20-year-old Destiny Nicole De La Rosa, was found in the backseat uninjured and was taken to police headquarters to speak with detectives.
